International Law & Security
Each summer, the Institute for International Law and Politics in the Department of Government hosts a three week, three credit course on "International Law and Security" from late-May to mid-June. The program is open to graduate students, as well as juniors and seniors in excellent standing who have received prior departmental approval from the Government Department at Georgetown University. The program is open to students at Georgetown University as well as other academic institutions.
Program of Study
Students are enrolled in GOVT 571-61. This course brings together a number of noted scholars and practitioners in the field and examines international law as it relates to topics such as: terrorism, status and treatment of detainees, preemptive self-defense, humanitarian intervention, arms control, weapons of mass destruction, war crimes, intelligence, human rights, and the environment. The program will also include field trips to relevant sites, as well as crisis simulations.
Students may choose to supplement this course to further explore an area or topic discussed during the program by registering for a 3-credit tutorial (during summer school). Students interested in earning these credits should enroll in a second session summer tutorial with one of the Program faculty members (tuition for the extra tutorial credits is not included in the Villa Le Balze program fee, regular on-campus summer tuition applies).
Program Costs
The cost of the program includes tuition for 3 credits, room and board, guest lectures, insurance and other onsite expenses. Please note that this does not include the transportation costs associated with travel to and from the Villa nor does it include the tuition for the 3 credit summer tutorial.
