History of the Georgetown University Gospel Choir
Music at Georgetown University has always been a highly salable entity through its history.
Choral and instrumental ensembles have always been imbedded in the fabric of campus living.
Under the Office of Mission and Ministry, sever liturgical ensembles expanded to officially
for the Georgetown University Gospel Choir.
Following an impressive performance at various campus and community programs, the Georgetown
University Gospel Choir (formerly the Georgetown University Ensemble) was organized in 1980.
Founded by Alfred Jones and Patricia Williams, the choir quickly gained popularity and acceptance
on campus, the Georgetown Community, and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
The exceptional talent and diligence of the group manifest a sincere dedication of their purpose.
The Georgetown University Gospel Choir is dedicated to worship, spiritual growth, fellowship, and
cultural enrichment.
Through the years, the choir has found outstanding community and student leadership including
Ronald Harbor, Rev. Jimmy Thomas, Rose Marie Jones, and Sylestea Sledge.
Presently, the choir is under the direction of Leviticus D. Thomas.
The gospel choir's 2005-2006 executive board consists of: Marsha Bannister, president;
Javier Royal, vice-president, Sandrine Rukundo, secretary; Dominique Pia Adkins, treasurer;
Noelene Jeffers, historian; Desiree Barnes, business manager; Paige Stanley, business manager;
Jessica Conley, chaplain; Udochi Nwogu, chaplain.
The Gospel Choir Music Ministry opens membership for all students, faculty, staff, and alumni
of Georgetown University. This is a ministry with powerful music - using both traditional and
contemporary gospel music forms to evangelize, to worship and praise, and to spread the messages
of love and hope of the Lord, Jesus Christ.
