The NCCC promotes culturally and linguistically
competent approaches in the provision of training, technical
assistance, and consultation that result in reciprocal
transfer of knowledge and skills among all collaborators
and partners. Based on this principle, the Community
of Learners approach was developed to meet key project goals
and to support other organizations to advance and sustain
cultural and linguistic competence. A Community
of Learners brings together key stakeholders, NCCC faculty,
consultants,
and family members/consumers to share expertise, experiences,
and challenges related to planning, implementing and
evaluating cultural and linguistic competence. A Community
of Learners also provides a forum to reflect on promising practices
and discuss the evidence about cultural and linguistic
competence including its relationship to the goal to
eliminate health and mental health disparities. Rather
than a didactic
approach or consultation model where participants are
the recipients of knowledge and skills imparted by
experts, the Community of Learners approach
respects and draws on
the contributions of all participants. Everyone learns
from each other as each participant brings a particular
set of knowledge and skills to the community.
