Partnerships and Cooperative Activities

Libraries and librarians are facilitators of communication between scholars, students, educators, and all learners, so it is not unusual to see librarians working together.

Cataloging and Indexing Projects and Networks

Deutsches Referenzzentrum für Ethik in den Biowissenschaften (DRZE)
This "sister" library in Germany serves as a mirror site for the ETHXWeb database.
Lauinger Library, Georgetown University
The monograph holdings of the Bioethics Library are included in GEORGE, the main campus online catalog, providing campus-wide, as well as Internet, access.
OCLC/WorldCat
Since 1978 the Bioethics Library has been a member of CAPCON, a Washington, DC-based network of libraries committed to sharing cataloging information. This, in turn, enables membership in OCLC and its international database, WorldCat, available by subscription to libraries around the world.
National Library of Medicine (U.S.)
Citations to books, journal articles, reports, audiovisual materials, legal materials, and unpublished documents are entered into either the LOCATORplus or PubMed database, as appropriate, through a contract with the National Library of Medicine.

Collection Development Partners

The exchange of publications greatly expands the coverage of the Bioethics Library. Staff are working with other bioethics research centers around the world to provide more comprehensive resources for scholars in the U.S. and abroad. Collection Development Partners include:

*Items already in the library collection are easily verified by doing an author search in the ETHXWeb database.

International Bioethics Exchange Program (IBEP)

The Bioethics Library donates multiple volumes of the Bibliography of Bioethics to libraries abroad to encourage development of bioethics reference resources. In exchange, the Bioethics Library would like to receive any books, policy statements, periodicals, and other materials about bioethical issues created by the participant countries.

Journal and
Book Publishers

Numerous publishers provide review copies of books to the editor of New Titles in Bioethics as well as complimentary copies of journals to be included in ETHXWeb and GenETHX.

Digital Resources Partners

Digital Georgetown

Digital Georgetown is a partnership among all of Georgetown's libraries and a collaboration with University Information Services and the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship. Its mission is to support the advancement of education and scholarship at Georgetown and contribute to the expansion of research initiatives, both nationally and internationally, by providing an infrastructure for the development, maintenance and preservation of digital resources and initiatives.

Hastings Center

Through a cooperative arrangement with the Hastings Center, the Bioethics Library has begun to digitize the full text of articles from the Hastings Center Report, IRB: Ethics and Human Research, and Hastings Center Studies (now ceased). The current year plus one prior year are embargoed, but citations to those issues can be retrieved from the ETHXWeb and GenETHX databases. The scanning project (which began with 2001 issues) will eventually provide an in-depth resource on bioethics research and practice.

National Bioethics Advisory Commission

NBAC designated the Bioethics Library as a home for the digital archive of its work. In addition, manuscripts and other records created by and for NBAC are in the archival collection.

Reference and Educational Cooperative Activities

College of Nursing and Health Science, George Mason University

Classes are held at the Bioethics Library at the start of each semester for undergraduate and graduate nursing students enrolled in ethics courses at GMU.

Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Georgetown University

Since the early 1970s, the Institute's annual, five-day Intensive Bioethics Course has brought thousands of individuals to Georgetown University for an exploration of the theoretical framework and practical issues of bioethics. Participants have full access to the library during the course, and a library proseminar is now offered to enable them to do further, in-depth bioethics research.

National Institute of Nursing Research, National Institutes of Health

Attendees of the annual Summer Genetics Institute come to the library for an orientation and overview of books and library resources, reference services, and training on NLM and NRCBL databases.
